The delivery of affordable medical care extends beyond the walls of our facilities to the communities around us and to the world.
Our founder’s philosophy helps inspire Health City to deliver medical excellence, community education, and services to those less fortunate. Each and every day, we are committed to fulfilling Dr Shetty’s pledge of “healthcare for all, regardless of socioeconomic status."
Health City is committed to ensuring that we advocate for the mental health of those in our community, especially young people, who are a vulnerable group. In light of this, we partner with the Alex Panton Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation, for its annual Youth Mental Health Symposium. The initiative seeks to shed light on mental health issues affecting children and young adults, which includes mental illnesses such as depression and suicide. Held under the theme ‘Let’s Talk About Trauma’, the 2023 instalment was attended by approximately 400 persons, who were equipped with various tools to help young people handle traumatic events in healthy ways. It is our hope that through partnerships like this, we can continue to advocate for mental wellness, remove the associated stigma, and support those who are in pain on their healing journey.
Our efforts to improve healthcare in the community are bolstered by our ongoing partnerships with service and community organisations. We frequently provide Community Health Talks and Screening events, which include a health-related presentation by one of our doctors to raise awareness on a variety of chronic illnesses such as cancer and diabetes, as well as and general wellness. We also facilitate various free, on-site screenings so people know their health status and if they are on track to remain in good health. We have provided presentations like this to the Seafarers Group, Lions Clubs as well as the Rotary Clubs, all of whom share our objective of improving the health of those in our community. We love to team up with organisations like these to increase the scope and impact of the good work they are doing in the community.
Health City is also organising Cancer Support groups throughout the districts. The first one is in East End with others to be formed in the near future.
Recognizing the importance of good healthcare for all, our team visits various corporate offices, bringing expert healthcare information to the busy professional over lunch. One of our physicians provides a short presentation, answers questions and helps employees get the information they need to be aware of the latest signs and symptoms of common health issues. The primary objective is to empower employees so they can take charge of their health and know when they need to seek medical advice. There are numerous benefits realized from doing these events, including bringing persons from across the organization together in an informal atmosphere where they have their medical questions addressed by our world-class medical team. This is an ongoing series, which is underscored by our mission to promote a culture of healing through knowledge-sharing with those in our community.
Our team loves showing up for those in need, participating in various runs/walks across the island on a consistent basis. Not only do these initiatives signal our commitment to those who receive the resultant support, but they bring our team members together. Some of these include:
Addison Kelly Butterfly 5K: seeks to keep the legacy of Addison alive (after her suicide in 2022) and to raise funds for Caymanians looking to study in the mental health field;
Delano Hislop Memorial Journey for Life: raises money and awareness of prostate and colon cancer;
Deputy Governor’s 5K Challenge: raises funds for Cayman Islands Cancer Society (CICS), MS Foundation of the Cayman Islands, the Alzheimer’s and Dementia Association of the Cayman Islands (ADACI);
Heart Warriors & Angels Beach Walk: aimed at increasing awareness and raising funds for babies born locally with congenital heart disease; and
Stride Against Cancer: raises awareness and critical funds for the Cayman Islands Cancer Society.
We understand that while persons may desire to improve their health, they don’t always have the resources to do so. Against this backdrop, Health City designs initiatives such as our ‘Freedom from Smoking’ program. We undertake the cost for community volunteers to complete an online course to become certified facilitators, who can then lead free community classes to help people quitstop smoking. The program is held in the districts of West Bay, Georgetown and East End, with eight meetings over seven weeks. All the course materials are provided. ‘Freedom from Smoking’ is a highly successful, globally recognized program which has helped 40 million people quitstop smoking. For more information, email StopSmoking@HealthCity.ky.
The Healthcare Explorers Program provides contextual medical and STEM education opportunities for Caymanian high school and college students to discern and prepare for careers in the healthcare field. A personal initiative of Dr. Devi Shetty, Chairman of the Board, the program has provided 33,000+ educational opportunities for students in the Cayman Islands since June 2014. Open to students of all ages, from primary school through to university, the award-winning program provides a foundation for students to nurture their curiosity and interest in Healthcare.Read More
