Wednesday, March 8 was a significant date on our calendar, with the launch of the ‘Freedom from Spoking’ programme. The first of eight classes kicked off at The Club in Cricket Square, Georgetown. Those in attendance were guided by Health City’s Oncology Operations Manager, Jennifer Weber, a certified facilitator. Her encouraging approach was information-packed, whetting the appetite of those in attendance, while giving food for thought to those who had not yet decided if they would commit. Over the course of seven weeks, attendees will be provided with the information, course materials, and support they need to quit and/or stay tobacco free.
There are various reasons why some smokers find it difficult to stop smoking for good. It’s no wonder the average smoker tries to quit 8-11 times before they stay tobacco free! The ‘Freedom from Smoking’ programme takes an unconventional approach to persons who truly desire stopping. Sponsored by Health City, the free programme combines group support and over-the-counter aids like gum and patches in a positive, non-judgmental environment; there are no scare tactics or shaming here! As more and more persons take advantage of these classes, it is our goal to prevent cancer while promoting good health in our community.
Are you a caring individual, a good listener and committed to helping your community? You’ll make a great facilitator! Join our growing number of community volunteers who are being trained as facilitators. No medical background necessary.
Health City will undertake the cost for you to complete an online course to become certified so you can then lead these free community classes.
‘Freedom from Smoking’ is a highly successful, globally recognised programme which has helped 40 million people stop smoking. The programme will be rolled out in the districts of West Bay and East End in the near future. For more information, email StopSmoking@HealthCity.ky.
